Day 3 – Trip to Córdoba: Mosques, Palaces & Roman Bridges

🚆 Early Start & Off to Córdoba

We were up bright and early for our day trip to Córdoba. Caught the #21 bus at 7:15 AM from near the Teatro Lope de Vega to Seville’s main train station, where — like all major Spanish rail hubs — they x-ray your bags before boarding.

The train ride was smooth and comfortable, and we arrived in Córdoba by 8:50 AM. It was the coldest morning of the trip at just 9°C, but with rain jackets doubling as windbreakers, we were fine.

🕌 The Magnificent Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba

After walking the perimeter of the old town and waiting for opening time, we queued up at 10 AM for Córdoba’s most famous landmark — the Mezquita-Catedral.

It’s hard to overstate how impressive this place is. Originally a vast Moorish mosque, the structure now houses a Christian cathedral right in its centre, making it a striking blend of Islamic and Christian architecture. Endless rows of red-and-white arches lead into a soaring nave and richly decorated chapels. It’s spiritually and visually stunning.

We also climbed the bell tower, which offered incredible views across the city. The ascent was a bit narrow and exposed in places, but well worth the effort.

🌉 Roman Bridge & Leisurely Strolls

After the mosque, we enjoyed a leisurely walk down through the historic centre and across the iconic Roman Bridge, which stretches over the Guadalquivir River. The bridge, with the Calahorra Tower at one end, offered some beautiful photo spots.

🏰 Palaces, Gardens & Syrian Lunch

Our next stops were two of Córdoba’s most charming landmarks:

  • Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos: A fortress-palace with tall towers and terraced gardens, once home to Christian monarchs.
  • Palacio de Viana: A hidden gem, filled with peaceful courtyards and elegant architecture, offering a quieter side of Córdoba’s beauty.

Between the two, we grabbed lunch at a Syrian takeaway, which hit the spot — warm, flavourful, and fast.

🌞 Parks & Sunshine

We wrapped up the day with a peaceful visit to Santa María Church and took some time to relax in a couple of local parks, soaking up the 20°C afternoon sunshine.

🚍 Return to Seville

The train back was easy and efficient. We had a short wait before hopping back on the #21 bus to the apartment, ending a fantastic and varied day in Córdoba.

📝 Summary

From the jaw-dropping Mezquita to the serene gardens of Viana, our Córdoba day trip was packed with history, architecture, and sunshine. It’s a perfect side trip from Seville, and one we’d absolutely recommend.
